Paxil and Babies born with Heart Defects
Paxil® and Babies born with Heart Defects
Data from the studies that revealed an increased risk of heart defects in babies whose mothers took Paxil® (paroxetine) during the first trimester of pregnancy indicates that most of the heart problems were septal defects/ A septal defect is actually a hole in the central wall of the heart.
This central wall of the heart – the septum – divides the heart into two roughly equal sections – a left section and a right section.. Each of these sections has an upper chamber (the atrium) and a lower chamber (the ventricle). If the hole is located where the central cardiac wall separates the left atrium from the right atrium, it is referred to as atrial septal defect. If the hole is located where the central cardiac wall separates the left ventricle from the right ventricle, it is referred to as a ventricular septal defect. In some cases, surgery is required to repair the septal defect. In others, the opening will heal itself and no surgery is required.
